The Deco X20 raises the 2.4 GHz band from 300 Mbps (802.11n on the X10) to 574 Mbps using the Wi-Fi 6 802.11ax standard on both bands. This matters for the growing proportion of devices that connect exclusively at 2.4 GHz — smart home sensors, IoT devices, older laptops, and smart TVs that don't support 5 GHz. At 574 Mbps, the 2.4 GHz band on the X20 handles these devices with genuine throughput capacity rather than the bottleneck that 300 Mbps 802.11n creates in densely connected homes. Combined 5 GHz (1,201 Mbps) and 2.4 GHz (574 Mbps) gives an AX1800 aggregate speed ceiling.

TP-Link HomeCare is a network-level security and management suite that operates at the router rather than the device level. The antivirus engine checks web traffic for malicious sites and blocks access before the page loads, without requiring antivirus software on individual devices. Infected device isolation automatically quarantines any network device that exhibits malicious traffic behaviour — preventing it from spreading threats to other devices on the network. Port intrusion prevention monitors incoming traffic for attack patterns. HomeCare QoS extends beyond the X10's device-level QoS to include application-level bandwidth prioritisation — giving video calls or gaming priority over background downloads across all network devices simultaneously.

The X20's parental controls go significantly further than the X10's basic time and content filtering. YouTube Restriction limits YouTube to age-appropriate content at the network level — covering smart TVs, gaming consoles, and tablets that don't support parental control apps. SafeSearch enforces Google and Bing safe search mode on all network devices automatically. URL filtering blocks specific domains or categories. Time schedules set bedtime internet cutoffs per profile, and monthly usage reports show site visit history and time spent online per family member profile — all managed from the Deco app without needing to install software on individual devices.

The 3-pack Deco X20 is rated for 4–6 bedroom homes — a larger coverage footprint than the X10's 3–5 bedroom 3-pack rating. Each unit communicates with the others to maintain a single SSID and password across the whole home, auto-roaming devices to the nearest unit as you move between rooms. Optional Ethernet backhaul connects units via wired cable for maximum inter-unit throughput, maximising the bandwidth available to client devices in each zone. Wireless backhaul works without infrastructure cabling in most homes.

WPA3-Personal provides the current-generation Wi-Fi security standard with Simultaneous Authentication of Equals (SAE), offering stronger protection against brute-force password attacks than WPA2. Backward compatibility with WPA2 and WPA covers older devices that don't support WPA3. Separate guest networks on both 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz isolate visitor devices from the primary network — preventing guest traffic from accessing shared network resources such as NAS drives, printers, and smart home hubs while maintaining full internet connectivity for guests.
